BCN Competicion have signed Super Aguri test driver and sometime racer Sakon Yamamoto.

“I am very happy and excited about challenging in such a competitive category as GP2,” Yamamoto said, “I would like to thank all the people who supported me for helping me realise this opportunity. I will do as much as I can to fulfil the role in my position and I am looking forward for driving a GP2 car. I just can’t wait for the forthcoming test!”

Yamamoto’s teammate is expected to be announced shortly.

Meanwhile 2006 GP2 driver Ernesto Viso is hoping for an F1 test seat at Toro Rosso, having driven the third car for Spyker in Brazil last year. The Venezuelan driver would bring substantial sponsorship money to the team. However, RBR test driver Robert Doornbos is also still a possibility for an STR test drive, if not a race drive.

“Basically, nothing has really changed as I still target a race seat at Toro Rosso,” Doornbos wrote on his website, “but I also keep my other options open.

“One of them is to test at Red Bull Racing and combine it with racing in the USA. Hopefully I can soon tell you more about my definite plans for ‘07.”

Paul Stoddart, the former Minardi F1 team boss who has now bought into the CTE Racing-HVM Champ Car team, has said he has been in contact with Doornbos regarding a Champ Car race seat for the Dutchman. In the convoluted world of Red Bull driver contracts, it’s anyone’s guess where Doornbos will actually end up.

Anthony Davidson topped the times at Jerez for Super Aguri yesterday, covering 145 laps of the Spanish circuit. Giancarlo Fisichella was second quickest for Renault, with Nico Rosberg third quickest for Williams and Fisichella’s teammate Heikki Kovalainen fourth.
