Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton put on a dominant performance to take a McLaren one-two at Sepang today, with Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen third. Nick Heidfeld was fourth for BMW-Sauber after a typically low-key performance, while Felipe Massa finished fifth after earlier going off the circuit while attempting to pass Hamilton. Renault had reason to be cheerful as, after a disastrous Australian GP, Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen finished sixth and eighth, sandwiching Toyota’s Jarno Trulli.

Alex Wurz’s ninth place was poor reward for a superb afternoon’s work, which saw the Williams driver work his way up from the rear of the grid. He at least fared better than teammate Nico Rosberg who saw his strong result go up in flames after 42 laps.

Will Power took pole position for Team Australia for this weekend’s Champ Car race in Las Vegas, ahead of Paul Tracy and Robert Doornbos. Reigning champion Sebastien Bourdais starts sixteenth after hitting a wall on his qualifying run.
