Javi Villa took his first GP2 victory at Magny Cours today, after a turbulent weekend for Racing Engineering. Villa took the lead after polesitterNicolas Lapierre crashed and held on to take the win despite pressure from Luca Filippi and Giorgio Pantano.
Meanwhile teammate Ernesto Viso was released from hospital after his horrifying crash yesterday.
Racing Engineering team boss Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon confirmed Viso had been released from hospital, and said: “He just called me to say he’s stuck in the damn traffic jam to get in!”
Villa said: “After what happened to Ernesto yesterday, with such a big crash, the fact he is okay, coupled with today’s victory, is the perfect result.”
Despite his rapid recovery, Viso is unlikely to drive at Silverstone next weekend.
James Jakes took his first F3 Euroseries win at Magny Cours this morning, ahead of Jean-Karl Vernay and Yelmer Buurman. Championship leader Sébastien Buemi finished nineteenth.
