Heikki Kovalainen put his McLaren on pole for tomorrow’s British GP at Silverstone this afternoon, ahead of Mark Webber’s Red Bull and Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari. Kovalainen’s teammate Lewis Hamilton was fourth quickest, ahead of Nick Heidfeld in the leading BMW Sauber.
It was Kovalainen’s maiden pole position.
Intermittent rain caused problems for some at Silverstone but there were some unexpectedly good results too - aside from Webber’s front row start the two Toro Rossos of Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais start eighth and thirteenth respectively, and Nelsinho Piquet starts seventh, just behind teammate Fernando Alonso.
Bruno Senna is on pole for the first GP2 race of the weekend at Silverstone, ahead of Romain Grosjean and Andi Zuber. Series returnee Lucas di Grassi was fourth quickest.
